What had been a fairly decent year for the equity markets till September 2016 was marred by demonetization in the last two months of the year. The markets gave up most of the gains and ended up marginally positive for the year.

Nifty 500 (the index which we feel represents the broader Indian market) reached an all time record close of 7,642.70 on 8 September 2016 but has since lost more than 8%.


One of the tests that we use to judge the ability of a fund manager is his/ her performance during a market correction. In the words of Warren Buffett, it is “only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.”

So, of the 50-odd equity mutual fund schemes that we track, here are the best performing funds during the period 8-Sep-2016 to 31-Dec-2016 (along with their comparison to the Nifty 500):
